Reading Challenge {Homeschool Style}

Last week I asked my daughter {who has been reading up a storm since Dec. 26th} if she would like to challenge herself to reading a set number of pages per month. She was all over it!! So we went to the website of the current book series she loves {Katie Kazoo Switcheroo} and they actually had a reading log chart. We were so excited!! Ha it doesn't take much to excites us over here. heehee

We printed it and started filling it out.

That was on the 11th.

She pledged to read 600 pages for the month of January.

Unfortunately the book she had just finished, on the 11th, was a gift from her brother for Christmas and she started it December 26th {it was 160 pages}. The same day she had finished another one {that was also 160 pages}. I told you she was reading up a storm. Anyway we can't remember what page she was on starting January 1st so we didn't count that book this month. So we just started counting as of the 11th.

Since the 11th she has read 4 chapter books totaling a page count of 298, and is currently on page 50 of Henry and Beezus by: Beverly Cleary.

She is so proud of herself and so are we!! She is so excited about reading and is doing fantastic. She is getting faster, and what I love the most is she retaining everything. I can flip to any part of the book... read the page to myself... ask her what is going on... and she answers that and then some. I love that we have found a series that she is so into. She seriously has been reading about 1 a day {when given the chance to just read and read and read.} One book actually she had "won" out of our treasure box we have set up {we found a whole bunch of these books at Half Price Books for only $1.98 so we grabbed them all! lol}. She asked to start reading it right away. That was about 8 o'clock one night last week. She stayed up until midnight that night and finished the whole book!

How can you tell her beautiful eyes "no" when they are begging to keep reading. My husband and I justified our "yes you can" as she doesn't have to wake up too early to go to school and she is massively excited to read. So yes you can stay up! Oh the joy on her face at midnight when she screamed, jumped up and down with excitement, and danced all over her room that she had finished it all in one sitting. Granted she was till reading them all in less than 24 hours anyways, but she was still excited all in one sitting.

Oh I love her!

So I would say the reading aspect of our schooling has totally been like a rocket and taken flight these days!!

We are looking into ideas as prizes for her at the end of the month when she meets or exceeds her goal of 600 pages. We have a couple ideas, but some just don't seem worthy enough of a prize for accomplishing such a wonderful feat!

Any ideas!? Hi yes you there.... yes you... Anything??

She is in 2nd grade. If that helps. heehee

We totally know she is going to meet if not exceed her goal of 600 pages this month. She is already thinking of what goal to set for herself for next month! We have also talked about doing a reading pledge drive with her. She can pick a cause or charity she would like to donate to, and we will pledge a set amount of money per page {we may even ask family members or friends if they want to participate as well}. If she meets that goal in the time frame we will donate to that cause for her in the amount that she has earned. She loves this idea. She has such a heart for helping and giving. We have a list of some places already that really spoke to her heart. Maybe we can throw that in to next month's reading goal. Hmmm food for thought.

How about you? What fun books are your kiddos picking up and reading?

Do they have a favorite series they just can't put down?

Do they chomp at the bit for the library to open so they can get more books?

I'd love to know. My kiddos are always looking for new series or books in general to check out. I'd love to hear what your kiddos are reading. Please share!

In the words of my daughter...

READING ROCKS!

{I love her! Just had to let you know again. :) }

I LOVE it!! Sounds like my son, also a 2nd grader. He reads so fast - we sometimes go to the Library to get a special book and he'll have it read half way before we even get home!! He loves Magic Tree House (books and research guides), The ABC Mysteries, Cul-de-sac Kids, You wouldn't want to be series, and just found a series called Real Kid Mysteries. Have you heard of www.bookadventure.com? It's a free site that lets kids take comprehension tests on books they've read. My son loves it! You can set up prizes on there for points earned and his favorite prize is always for us to let him buy a new book at the bookstore. He takes forever to chose the one he wants, but loves being able to look around and pick one he likes!

W00T!!

kudos to her!

I tend to think the feeling of accomplishment and knowing they've done a job well is enough of a reward most time(for my boys).

or reward of something that goes with 'reading'- like a book light or new bookends.
